Camping Pictures

We went camping in May with our normal group of, um, unique personalities.

For some families, camping means cabins. For Wander, camping is always primitive camping. You only have what you haul with you. I insist that Wander haul all the creature comforts for me.

*** Accommodations ***
We didn't make it to camp until almost midnight, so the girls and I slept in the car the first night.

Our installation included a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room, and bathroom.

I got to make the beds and tidy the inside of the tent every morning. Since I'm not a morning person, and I'm not an outdoorsy person, I was always the last one out the tent and ready to go.

The toothbrushing tree.

I wore my hat all day, every day and managed to avoid sunburn.

*** Fun ***
There weren't many other kids, so Sparkle and Glitter hung out with each other on this old tire swing a lot.

Another girl showed up for a few hours on Saturday afternoon.

The other kids were a bit young, but still fun.

Running around

Fishing is always fun. Sparkle has gotten quite good at casting.

We took this kite out for it's maiden flight. Wander had it for over a decade, but have never had an opportunity to use it before.

*** Trade Blanket ***
Sparkle and Glitter hang out on the trade blanket before the bidding started. Funny, no-one offered to trade for them.

Some of the wares.

Glitter was taken by a small pouch that one person had, but she had nothing to trade. A really generous friend traded with the original owner of the pouch so that he could give the pouch to Glitter. Instead of simply giving the pouch to Glitter, I suggested that he trade for a drawing. (Glitter previously "sold" a bunch of pictures to some of Grandma & Grandpa's friends at the donut shop.) He graciously accepted the trade of "original artwork."

*** Food ***

Wander led a couple of plant walks.

Bugs (aka Sparkle) showing how to catch and eat bugs.

*** Fire ***
Sparkle discovered starting a fire with a magnifying glass.

The ground was so hot under the main fire that it bubbled and steamed and frothed even after the fire was out for several hours and two coolers of ice water was dumped on it.

*** Critters ***
Crickets and other bait that Sparkle caught.

Dung beetle

The grounds were crawling with little skinny lizards. They were too fast for Sparkle, but this guy managed to catch two of them.

A hummingbird got trapped in our screened room.

*** Glitter Takes My Camera ***
Glitter wanted to take pictures, so I finally let her. I love how you can see Glitter reflected in the sunglasses of the people she's photographing.
